Blizzcon: A hit? Or a Cataclysmic miss?

So, Blizzcon started yesterday. It was good. I got to see some pretty new graphics for Diablo III. Even a few custom maps for Starcraft II, but that was really all. Their big announcement for the year was Cataclysm. Wasn't that their announcement a few months ago, too? They went through this whole stage show to get you into Cataclysm. Consisting of closing your eyes and listening to the clash of rubble caused by Deathwing's awakening.

Really? Was that it? What about this new MMO you're supposedly working on? It's being tested in house right now. Yet, it's not far enough along to actually be press worthy yet? Well, if it's being tested then it obviously has a concept. If it has a concept then it obviously has details to offer. I think a lot of people were disappointed that this announcement wasn't made.

I was one of those people. I watched in wait. Figuring "well, they released a little bit about it a few weeks ago. Surely they'll let us know a little more". However, that simply was not the case. Which ultimately left me with a bad taste in my mouth. This Blizzcon was definitely pretty dry. Metzen stated that all of the big announcements for the year have already been made. Maybe he's fooling us? Maybe there will be something big today. Maybe they'll come out of nowhere with it. If they do, then I'll immediately recant my statement.

However, I found the bulk of Blizzcon's first day to be pretty uneventful. I know it's for the players, but the players expect to be wow'd (no pun intended). I really don't think they've pulled that off this year. I almost feel like I've opened a present on Christmas morning only to find out the box was empty. However, day II is about to get rolling. So, we'll just have to wait and see.

  1. Gotta agree, I actually bought a virtual ticket and I was not very happy with the first day. Some good entertainment here and there but no info I couldn't just as well have read up on over at mmo-champion.com in hindsight.
Let's hope they drop a bomb tonight, but somehow I don't think they will.

  2. Yeah, it was a bit of a disappointment. Their big announcements were things we've known about for quite a while now. If this was all they had to offer, they should have kept a lid on it until Blizzcon. Instead of trying to reuse it for the event.
